The Big Apple and Catch a Parade This Winter In New York
The winter months are the good time for many travellers to New York which is a beautiful and romantic destination with twinkly trees, ice rinks and crisp snow. Your trip should include ice skating and a visit to the world famous Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree which those heading to one of the many hostels in New York and chance to catch one of the Big Apple’s incredible parades.


No other city throws a parade quite like New York and during the winter, there are two big events which area ideal for youth hostel visitors.


One of these is the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, which is held on the evening of All Hallow’s Eve (October 31st) and promises visitors a spooky time.


The parade starts at 7pm local time and in order to make sure you get as close to the ghost and ghouls as possible, you may want to head out of your hostel in New York as early as you can. This parade starts on 6th Avenue and finishes on 23rd Street.


However, probably the most famous winter event in New York is the Macy’s parade, which is held on Thanksgiving day in November. This incredible carnival marks the beginning of the festive season and features an appearance by Santa himself.


The parade is most famous for its inclusion of giant helium balloons of famous TV and film cartoon characters, with Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, Barney the dinosaur, Kermit the Frog, the cast of Sesame Street and SpongeBob SquarePants all making an appearance in recent years.


The carnival travels down 77th St towards Central Park and then onto Columbus Circle. Then the festivities head down one of New York’s most famous streets, Broadway, before finishing up in Herald Square.
